When adding an exhaust brake to any diesel, you must have a way to basically tell the exhaust brake when your foot is on the throttle so that the brake is not engaged when doing so, as otherwise, meltdown would occur. On almost every vehicle application, its as simple as installing a wire into the vehicle's ECM that signals throttle position. However, on 1998.5 model year trucks with a manual transmission, an ECM bypass is required to install an exhaust brake because the throttle position sensor function is not in the vehicle's ECM. Thus, PacBrake designed this switch to be mounted under the vehicle's throttle pedal that will then send the signal to the brake whether it should be engaged or not.
