The factory clutch found in the 2005.5-2018 model year Rams is known as a G56. This clutch is unique compared to others in the diesel truck market in that it features a dual mass flywheel. This flywheel, compared to a traditional solid,one piece flywheel, has the ability to engage similar to a torque converter found in an automatic transmission. This sounds like a great idea, but the unfortunate truth is that these types of flywheels fail, especially as towing weight and horsepower increase. The most common upgrade is to convert from the dual mass flywheel in favor of a solid flywheel, such as this kit from South Bend Clutch.
South Bend's Dyna Max Performance Replacement Kit features two different facing materials: one performance organic facing and one Feramic facing on a marcelled fin. The pressure plate is modified for higher plate load
and a smoother engagement. This clutch is best suited for stock trucks that tow up to 25,000 pounds and have no more than 475 horsepower and 1000 foot pounds of torque.. South Bend will not warranty this clutch if your truck has performance tuning with aftermarket exhaust, at which point they would recommend one of their dual disc clutches.
